Alleged hijacker sings like a canary after being caught by Randburg police

RANDBURG – Arrest of one robber with a toy gun leads to the arrest of six.

Six alleged robbers have been arrested by Randburg police after a series of hijackings with a toy gun in the Bryanston and Randburg area.

In the early evening of 14 August, at the corner of Grosvenor and William Nicol drives in Bryanston, police were on duty when they heard one of their members requesting assistance on the police radio.

According to Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja, the officer had noticed a suspect pulling out a gun and threatening passing motorists, while another two suspects threatened a driver and a passenger of a vehicle demanding they open the car doors.

The officers rushed to the scene and on their arrival, they found the officer already had a suspect handcuffed.

Caught in possession of a toy gun, the suspect gave the officers information on the other suspects who had run away.

The officers immediately started to search the area, eventually locating the suspects in a vehicle fitting the description given by the arrested suspect.

Maja said, “Officers stopped the vehicle and started searching the occupants and the vehicle.

They managed to find two firearms, which happened to be toy guns, 11 cell phones, three [computer] routers, two laptops, passports, and identity books.”

The suspects were immediately placed under arrest.

“As a preliminary investigation was conducted, it was established that the suspects had just robbed another victim in Sandton.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Randburg and Wynberg magistrates’ courts to face charges of armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen items.
