Brownies celebrate 100 years of empowerment

DELTA PARK – Young Brownies had fun celebrating 100 years of activities.

Brownies from all over Gauteng gathered at the Girl Guides Trefoil Park in Delta Park on 11 August to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Brownies and Girl Guides.

Lifelong member and leader Nontobeko Mdhluli said, “The Brownies is very much a girl empowerment programme, and are greatly involved in community outreach programmes.

They learn skills, teamwork, and make lasting friendships along the way.

“The girls had fun participating in the variety of challenges, and it was a great way to celebrate 100 years of this inspiring group.”

Girl Guides regional commissioner Lesley McGillivray helps to cut the Brownies celebratory cake for some young eager eaters.

Girls participated in a fun day filled with activates and were given a 100-year Brownie Centenary badge for taking part.

Brownies are for young girls under the age of 10, and after that age, they become Girl Guides.

Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are a Scouting movement found worldwide, founded in 1918 by Lord Baden Powell and his wife, originally and still largely designed for girls and women only.

The event was concluded with the cutting of a celebratory cake for the youngsters and leaders to enjoy.

Mdhluli said, “We are always welcoming new girls to become part of both the Brownies and Girl Guides, and I strongly encourage any parents interested to contact us.”
