After it was brought to One Small Act of Kindness‘ attention that community members of Zandspruit Informal Settlement had been ravaged by shack fires, the group called on the greater community to assist with donated goods.
One of the group’s members, Kelly-Ann van der Meer explained the importance of the charity drive and how they hope to further change the lives of many communities like Zandspruit.
She explained that for this drive the group asked community members to donate clothing, non-perishable foods, household items and linen.
Van der Meer said about 12 shacks were affected by the fires.
“We deal with Honeydew Police Station on a regular basis and the matter of the fires was brought to our attention,” she said.
With a deep need to help those who had faced the loss of most of their possessions through the fire, One Small Act of Kindness looked to assist these families in any way they could.
The group took to various social media platforms to get the word out and request the community donate goods.
Various items came pouring in and they managed to give these donated items to those who needed it the most.
Van der Meer said the group continuously works on varying drives that range from helping schools, families and communities adding that they do this, “Without trying to duplicate them, to ensure we can assist as many people as possible.”
She concluded the group aims to create awareness, supplying much-needed goods and the further support from volunteers.
