Strongmen compete at Honeydew Toyota

NORTHGATE – Strongmen and Springbok legends came to support the Brotherhood Strongman Competition at Halfway Toyota Honeydew.

The Brotherhood Strongman Competition coincided with the Halfway Honeydew Toyota 4×4 fun day, and to help launch the latest Toyota Hilux model on 4 August.

Halfway Toyota Honeydew’s Wayne Goosen said, “Today’s competition is somewhat based upon the Toyota Hilux’s advertising campaign, Are you tough-er-er than a Hilux?, and we hope to have events like this with the Brotherhood continue for years to come.”

Some 15 contestants competed in truck pulling, car lifting, big wheel turning, and many more activities all for this great cause.

Strongmen took their turns pulling a 16-ton truck over a distance, deadlifting Toyota Hilux bakkies as many times as they could, as well as a farmer’s walk, military press, and a static hold competition.

The organiser of the event and Brotherhood member Peter McGonigle said, “Today’s event is not just about lifting cars and pulling tyres. We want to inspire the average person on the street to know that they are stronger than they think, both mentally, physically and emotionally.”

Brotherhood Strongman has been active for more than three years as a group of gym fanatics with the aim to make a difference in people’s lives.

“We work with a number of charities, such as Grain of Hope and Soul2Soul, and we have associated ourselves with a number of brands including Toyota, and when we do activities elsewhere, they are always on board to help out.”

Former Springbok legend Thys Burger also attended the event to help raise funds for the charity initiative.

Burger said, “I have a few charities that I have nominated, which help with the [many] farm murders happening in our country. These charities focus on protecting pensioners who still live on farmlands to help protect their homes.”

Burger brought various signed items such as wine signed by Springboks Bakkies Botha and Frik du Preez, and various other signed sports memorabilia, to be auctioned during the event.

“What is important with the charities that we are helping is that we will not hand them money directly. They have given us a wish-list, and funds raised will be used to buy from there,” Burger added.
