Captain Balan Muthan, spokesperson of Honeydew Police Station has warned the community to beware of Internet scams.
In recent weeks, there has been an increase in numerous reports of scams targeting prospective used vehicle buyers.
Pre-owned vehicles are advertised on various media platforms and buyers are requested to pay a deposit up front to secure a deal.
Once the deposited money has been withdrawn from the account, the buyer finds that the seller’s cell phone has been disconnected and it is usually at this stage that he or she realises that their deposit has disappeared.
Another scam that has surfaced is when criminals call complainants or victims of stolen property such as vehicles, pretending to be police officers.
The scam artists tell complainants that their property has been found, but handing over the property to the complainants might take a long time.
To fast-track the process, they request a certain fee from the complainants and promise to give them their property within a day or two after payment of the stipulated amount.
However, after receiving payment these criminals just vanish.
