Suspect arrested for cellphone fraud

CRESTA – Linden police fight crime.

Linden police are warning the community to be wary when buying items online.

This comes after a man was arrested at a shopping centre in Cresta for selling a fake cellphone.

The arrest was made by Constable Matome Johannes Rasekgokga when he received a tip-off from a community member who found the cellphone advertised on Facebook and the price too good to be true.

“The cellphone was a Samsung Galaxy S9 which was advertised for R 5000,” said Rasekgokga. “The suspect was arrested during the exchange and after taking the cellphone to Samsung, we were able to verify that the cellphone was fake and its retail price is about R20 000.”

Police charged the suspect for fraud and for being in possession of a fake cellphone and the suspect will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

“The community must not buy phones on social media because some of these phones are fake. They must contact police before they go and meet the seller so they can verify,” added Rasekgokga.

Linden police spokesperson Takalani Matumba said she was happy with the hard work from Rasekgokga and also warned the community to be careful of scams.
