From Obama to Dagada: What happened in Joburg this week?

JOBURG – We take a look at news coming from the City of Johannesburg this week.

This week was all about the 16th Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture, delivered by former US President Barack Obama.

But other events made the news as well:

A comprehensive outline of Joburg’s social benefits programme, the Expanded Social Package (ESP), has been released for people who might benefit from it.

The system targets pensioners over 60 and citizens living within the boundaries of Johannesburg with an income not exceeding R5 578.91 per month.

Former City of Johannesburg Finance MMC, Dr Rabelani Dagada, decided to call it quits when he handed in his resignation letter to the DA’s Federal Executive. He claimed that the party wanted to end his political career.

Dagada was removed as MMC by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba on 15 January, who shortly thereafter issued a statement alleging corruption, nepotism, price fixing and the victimisation of some City officials on the part of Dagada.

But Dagada maintains his innocence.

In conclusion, there was arguably the most popular annual lecture delivered by Obama which had the country and the world staring at their screens for more than an hour to listen to what the former president had to say about current politics and how to maintain social change in the modern and often confusing world.
