Aurora youngsters say ‘Greece is the word’

SUNDOWNER – Curro Aurora learners embarked on their annual International Legacy Tour to Greece on 1 July.

A group of Curro Aurora youngsters embarked on their annual International Legacy Tour to Greece on 1 July.

A group of 41 learners and four staff members left the Johannesburg winter chills for the warm shores of Greece during their school break.

The excursion aims to teach them about the fascinating Greek culture and history, which includes visits to Athens, Santorini and Crete. Highlights the youngsters are looking forward to, include visits to Plaka and the Acropolis, the Akrotiri archaeological site and the Fira, Oia and Melidoni caves.

Adventure and cultural activities include snorkelling, kayaking, pottery, dance and cooking classes. The young ones are looking forward to spending time at the biggest waterpark in Crete. Of course, no visit would be complete without the obligatory plate-smashing!

Teacher Jannie Viljoen said, “It’s time for adventure, cultural enrichment and international community service. A large part of the legacy focus at Aurora involves giving back to the community. Aurora believes anyone can travel internationally, but it is essential for personal development and Ubuntu for learners to serve their fellow man.”

The children are looking forward to serving at the Open Door Centre of Education and Rehabilitation, which is a hospitable Greek home that actively works towards the education and rehabilitation of people with cerebral palsy.

The centre helps with medical diagnosis and care, therapy, education, social and psychological support, vocational training, temporary hospitality, permanent residential care and a wide range of recreational programmes on a daily basis, free of charge.

Viljoen added, “Our learners will participate in four working teams and they will be involved in activities ranging from sport, dance, creative activities and general service, such as gardening and cleaning in the home.”
