Gauteng schools in harmony at national choir competition

RANDBURG – National school choirs impress at championships

Gauteng choir teams made the most of their home ground advantage as they faced off against their national competitors recently.

Held at the Rhema Bible Church, the ABC Motsepe South Africa School Choir Eisteddfod National Championships had all the top choirs performing from all nine provinces.

The competition is seen as one of the Department of Basic Education’s most significant cultural events on the annual school calendar.

The theme for this year’s competition was Celebrating the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu through music. The choirs had a chance to showcase their hard work and talent, and the Gauteng teams did not disappoint this year.

On the first day, Hector Peterson Primary School’s boys’ choir took third place with a rendition of George Weiss’ What a Wonderful World.

Funda Ujabule Primary School’s boys’ choir took first for the Preamble to the constitution of South Africa.

They followed this up with a third-place position for Hail Holy Queen by Roger Schaiman.

Mogobeng Primary School impressed audiences with their rendition of Laas toe Oom Jakkals by P Roux and was awarded third place. Mogobeng also took second place for the Anthem of South Africa.

On day two, Magaliesburg Secondary School’s sextet took third place with a rendition of Uthando by O.L.P Mbatha while Madibatlou Primary School was awarded first place for Oh Happy Day by James Varrick Armaah.

In the B category of the secondary schools, Mokgome High School took second place for Quoniam tu Solus Sanctus and Cum Santo Spiritu by A Vivaldi.

On the third day, Fumana High School’s soloist Banele Nqayi came second in the Soprano Solo category for Let the bright Seraphim. This school’s trio finished in third place for their performance of Ah Caro Sposo, Od Dio!

On the final day of competition, Katlehong High School bagged the third position in the Mezzo-Soprano/Alto Solo category for their performance of Thambo Lenyoka by Princess Magogo Kadinizulu.
