The international theme this year was Beat plastic pollution, and specifically, plastic in the ocean. The school encouraged the children to use plastic recyclables from home to create a fashionable accessory item.

The school’s marketing officer, Robyn Aingworth said children arrived on the day wearing some interesting accessories ranging from bottle cap earrings and necklaces to bottle jetpacks.

“They then deposited their plastic items into the correct recycling bins around the school at the of the day,” she said. Adding each grade participated in different collaborative activities for the day but were first exposed to some videos related to plastic in the ocean.

“This spurred some serious thought-provoking conversations. Using critical thinking strategies, children then decided how they could change their day-to-day living habits to reduce the amount of plastic in the environment.”

Aingworth concluded that although World Environment Day is a fun and interactive day, they trained the children to become future-focused learners who will change the dire situation the environment currently faces.
