Captain Xoli Mbele, Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, has shared some information about recent arrests made by members of the station.
A 20-year-old male was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and armed robbery.
According to Mbele, the alleged crime occurred at Renaissance Street in Crown Mines on 10 June 20 about 9am.
It is alleged that two suspects robbed a 46-year-old male at the said address.
“The victim was on his way to work when he was confronted by two males. One of them pointed a firearm at the victim and demanded his cell phone and money, ” said Mbele.
Police that were busy with their routine crime prevention duties apprehended one suspect. His accomplice managed to run away.
The cell phone that was taken from the victim was recovered and police also found the suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm with no live ammunition. Investigation is under way and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
In a separate incident, police arrested a 29-year old male for domestic violence at Qambalala Flats, situated on the corner of Ellof and Albert streets in the CBD.
According to Mbele, the husband allegedly assaulted his 28-year-old wife at their home after accusing her of cheating.
The victim managed to go to the police station where she opened a criminal case against the husband.
“Police accompanied her to her residential place where they found her husband. He was apprehended for assault common under domestic violence.”
Investigations are still under way and the suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court. Mbele appeals to women to not open cases of domestic violence and close them later.
“If your partner assaults you once, he won’t stop it until he kills you.”
He said the best way to deal with such cases is to let the law take its course. “No man has a right to assault a woman. Say no to domestic violence and expose the abuser.”
Mbele concluded by saying that a good working relationship between police and communities can result in the reduction of the escalating crimes committed against women.
