From boeresport to potjiekos, this is a family day not to miss

EMMA PARK – Enjoy a fun-filled day at Emma Park on 16 June.

A fun-filled family day has been planned at Emma Park on 16 June and families of all shapes and sizes are invited to join.

The day is organised by Die Voortrekkers – Oord Goudrand, a region of the cultural movement aimed at young children to become better and skilled citizens, and involves ‘Vootrekker Vriendelik Ondernemings’ (VVO), or local businesses, that will promote their products and services.

Children enjoy ‘sakresies’ at a Boeresport event in 2015.

A potjiekos competition, singing competition, and various food stalls will keep the family busy on the day. And if anyone is feeling up to the task, an ox wagon race and boeresport will also test the fittest of the family.

And for those wishing to merely relax, live entertainment and even a K9 performance will entertain the entire family.

The day will also commemorate 80 years since famous Voortrekker Johanna van der Merwe’s ox wagon arrived at Emma Park where the Johannes van der Merwe Voortrekker Monument now stands.

An ox wagon will be pulled from a church in Linden at 8am that morning, kicking off the entire day.

The region’s leader, Chaleen Strydom, told Northcliff Melville Times the funds raised on the day will go towards the community’s needs, especially towards helping to upgrade Emma Park.

“The day is about meeting the community and promoting community businesses.”

There are still stalls available for businesses wishing to participate and spots are still open for the competition. Contact Hendri van der Loo by sending an email to

Entrance to the market is free.
