Lights off a security worry for Randpark Ridge residents

RANDPARK RIDGE – A concerned resident has raised the issue of non-functioning and incorrectly timed streetlights.

A concerned resident has raised the issue of streetlights that don’t work and others that are incorrectly timed.

John Beggs said, “I live in Randpark Drive and the street lights between Seder and Sering streets have been out of order for going on two months. I have reported the matter to the relevant departments at City Power and they have given me a reference number.

“In the meantime, the lights between Njala and Ysterhout are burning during the day.”

Beggs raised the issue with the Randburg Sun as he is worried about the safety impact issues like this have in our communities.

“I would like to know what the underlying problem is. This is a widespread issue across the city, and I would like to know how the problem will be solved. Surely something can be done? All I am asking for is better communication, and for the community to all voice their issues so that this problem can be solved.”

Beggs has observed that some areas have lights that shine brilliantly during the day, and others where lights do not shine at all. “This, to my mind, indicates a serious issue.”

The Randpark Ridge Village Residents Association’s chairman Phil Culham said, “There is definitely a problem with the electricity infrastructure across the city, but due to the fact that this problem is widespread, residents need to, unfortunately, learn to be patient.”

Ward 98 councillor Beverley Weweje echoed Culham’s statement saying, “The City is inundated with calls like this on a daily basis, and the department tries its best with dealing with the backlog.

“In the last week, I have dealt intensively with streetlight issues in the Windsor East area. The good news is that I have now received word that the department is attending to the backlog of work in the Randpark Ridge area.”

This is the process that should be followed when reporting any municipal electricity issue:

1. Make sure that the issue is ongoing and not temporary
2. Call/log a complaint with City Power either telephonically or online
3. Turnaround time should take approximately 7 to 14 working days
4. If the problem persists and has not been rectified, call your local ward councillor to escalate the issue.
