Each year, film legend Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a tournament in South Africa showcasing over 50 sports with top talent and it’s not all about well-oiled glutes.
Ruben Grobler, a Grade 9 learner from Curro Aurora took part in the Speedcubing event at the 2018 Arnold Classic Africa competition over the weekend of 18 May at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Speedcubing, also known as Speedsolving, is an activity which includes solving a variety of twisty puzzles – the most famous one being the Rubik’s Cube – as quickly as possible.
For the first time, Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to include Speedcubing as an event at the tournament and Speedcubes South Africa used this opportunity to hold the SA Nationals Competition.
Grobler said, “Speedcubing is so much fun, and the feedback has been that it was a tremendous success, so much so, that Mr Schwarzenegger wants to include the event every year.”
Ruben’s performances were astonishing, solving the 3x3x3 cube in 9,97 seconds. He took part in 15 events where he dominated, gathering nine gold, five silver and one bronze medals.
In the process, he also set three new Africa records and three new South African records.
The new world Speedcube rankings were released on 26 May and Grobler is now officially ranked the number one player in Africa and number 281 in the world.
Ruben also received a special mention on the World Cube Association website, where they described his performance as, “Having a field day.”
