Councillor’s Corner: The relevance of Section 79 commitees

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner.

This week’s question was:

What is a Section 79 committee and why is it important? Does it really affect service delivery in the City?

Mike Wood, Ward 104 councillor, answered:

The Section 79 committee is an oversight instrument used by the council to hold the executive and the administration to account. They interrogate reports and do oversight visits to the areas that fall within their jurisdiction.

Each Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) has to account to their respective Section 79 committee. The committee can summon officials to appear before the committee to account.

The Section 79 committees are watchdog bodies, charged with ensuring that service delivery levels to the public are maintained.

It’s a multi-party body that meets regularly to carry out their oversight role.
