Joburg EMS’ Easter accident stats cause for concern

JOBURG – City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services released statistics of accidents and fatalities on Joburg roads after the Easter weekend.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has released statistics of accidents and fatalities on Joburg roads after the Easter weekend.

From 6pm 29 March to 6am 3 April, the City of Joburg EMS Services Call Centre received a total of 328 emergency cases. Of these, 183 were motor vehicle accidents and 145 were pedestrian accidents with 5 fatalities.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said, “We, therefore, would like to urge our residents to exercise extreme caution when walking and also crossing the road.

Residents are urged to wear visible clothing, especially at night, and also to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing the freeway and refrain from drinking and walking, especially at night.

“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving on our roads, obey the rules of the road, keep to the prescribed speed limit, and keep a safe following distance to prevent motor vehicle accidents.”
