Joburg patches up after heavy rains

JOBURG – The Johannesburg Roads Agency said it will embark on a regional maintenance and repair programme with a prioritised focus on potholes.

The past week was a cold and wet one for Joburgers.

Due to the heavy rains across the city in the past few days, there have been a number of reports regarding road defects, damage to bridges and an increase in the number of potholes.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency said it would embark on a regional maintenance and repair programme with a prioritised focus on potholes.

MMC for Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba, says the procurement process of contactors is at an advanced stage.

MMC for Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said the procurement process of contractors was at an advanced stage and the appointment of local labour would commence once the processes were concluded.

“We urge residents to be patient as potholes cannot be repaired whilst the roads are still wet,” she said. “The teams will start repair work in the coming week and we ask that road users be cooperative and cautious as the teams do their work.”

The City’s Department of Public Safety also had Emergency Management Services, Disaster Management and Metro police out in full force, manning intersections where traffic lights were down and easing traffic congestion.

Residents whose dwellings are close to rivers were evacuated early on in the weekend and no fatalities were reported.
