Honeydew police winning the fight against crime

HONEYDEW – Hard work from police sees drop in crime.

An increase in police visibility, multi-discipline operations and crime prevention efforts by the Honeydew Police Station has seen a fall in crime in the area.

According to the station’s spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, the increase in action by police in the area has limited the scope that criminals can operate in which has led to a decrease in criminal activity.

“We have also been closing down illegal shebeens and liquor outlets operating in the community,” said Muthan. “Constant police patrols in the community have also helped us fight crime and protect the residents. Illegal substance abuse contributes enormously to serious and violent crimes.”

This is in stark contrast to the crime statistics recorded from April 2016 and March 2017 which showed that Honeydew was one of the most dangerous areas in Gauteng.

In that period, Honeydew topped the burglary at residential premises and contact sexual offences stats, and was second for motor vehicle and motorcycle thefts.

To remain safe at all times, Captain Muthan issued some tips:

  • Be vigilant at all times
  • Don’t walk alone in isolated places
  • Make sure your car is properly locked when leaving it in the parking lot
  • Keep your belongings close to you
  • Don’t accept help from strangers at ATMs
  • Don’t be too trusting
  • Let your family or friends know where you are
  • Put your belongings in the boot of the car and not on car seats
  • Always make sure your house is locked and your windows closed before going to sleep.
