The Johannesburg Roads Agency has begun work on fixing the sinkhole on the corner of Republic Road and Main Street.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said, “I was onsite on Saturday assessing the extent of the work being undertaken… The remedial work is quite intensive and should be complete within two weeks or so.”

According to the roads agency, the sinkhole was caused by dislodged stormwater pipes.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency said, “The problem occurred over a long period of time due to a seepage of water through the pipe, eroding the road layers which caused the sinkhole.

“As Republic Road is a busy traffic route, including a bus route, the team is working around the clock, including evenings and weekends, to ensure work is completed as a matter of urgency.”

Potter added, “The contractor has to rebuild the stormwater junction box and reinstate the tar layers back to its level with the existing road surface.”

Peters-Scheepers continued, “JRA wishes to thank all road users for their patience whilst this emergency work is being undertaken.”

Potter said, “I am pleased that a contractor has been appointed and that work has begun. The work being undertaken is large and required the necessary appointment of a contractor, hence the delay in attending to the matter.”

Motorists are urged to be cautious when approaching the site. According to the roads agency, the anticipated competition date is Friday 23 March.
