Fuel price drops ahead of hefty April hike

JOBURG – Motorists will have a bit of relief at the pumps before fuel and other prices expect to soar in April.

South African motorists will have one last bit of breathing space before April’s hefty fuel levy hike.

On 2 March, the Department of Energy released a statement on the March adjustment of the country’s fuel prices.

In the statement, the department explained that the March fuel price will drop by 36 cents per litre for 93 and 95 octane petrol, 47 cents per litre for 0.05 per cent sulphur diesel and 44 cents per litre for 0.005 per cent sulphur diesel.

Other fuel prices will drop from between 22 cents per litre to 69 cents per litre – illuminating paraffin will drop by 22 cents while the maximum LPG retail price will decrease by 69 cents.

The department explained that the two main reasons for the decrease is the rand strengthening against the US$ from R12.20 to R11.82 as well as the decrease in the crude oil price.

The average Brent Crude oil price decreased from US$69.06 to US$65.05 per barrel.

The latest fuel price adjustment will come into effect on 7 March.
