Councillor’s Corner: How many Metro police cars, officers patrol each ward?

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner.

This week’s question was:

How many Metro police cars, officers and so forth, patrol each ward and should residents have contact details for these specific officers?

If we want to let them know about any bylaw contraventions, what would be the best way to do that?

Ward 117 councillor, Tim Truluck answered:

There is no answer for the number of cars as it is done on a regional basis and depends on needs in the area and elsewhere in Jozi. The number of Metro police officers is still low.

The new 1 500 officers being trained will take two to three years still.

Usually, they respond to requests from councillors, community groups, CPFs, and so forth and they go out and investigate or ticket. I am not sure how responsive they are to normal requests from residents.

The new Chief of Police, David Tembe, is very responsive and is doing his best to make changes. You can contact him on Twitter and Facebook on Ask The Chief JMPD.

Currently, the city is running Operation Buya Mthetho. It is a joint operation between all key city departments and entities including Metro police, Environmental Health, Social Development, Infrastructure Services, the City’s legal department, and Development Planning.

Requests for assistance under Operation Buya Mthetho can be sent to NtombizodwaS@joburg.org.za and SylviaP@joburg.org.za

Emergency calls with regard to bylaw enforcement, traffic management and crime prevention must be reported to the 24-hour Command Centre on 011 375 5911.

Do you have a question for a ward councillor?

As a local newspaper, the Randburg Sun provides a platform for residents to learn about, understand and follow local government.

As an extension of that, there is a weekly column called Councillor’s Corner which is a platform for you, our readers, to voice your concerns or questions for ward councillors to respond to.

Different, willing, ward councillors will respond to a question each week.
