To celebrate the recent World Environmental Education Day, Curro Aurora‘s children constructed shower buckets that would help conserve water.
Primary school head, Christiaan Maree, said the current drought in Cape Town prompted the school to teach the children how best to preserve water.
“The children had to work in groups to design shower buckets that people in Cape Town could use,” he said.
Learners from Grades 4 to 7 designed shower buckets whilst Grades 1 to 3 planted seeds to mark the day. As the school has created its own garden, they plan to harvest these seeds in the autumn and make meals from them.
It took a week and an hour each day for all the shower buckets to get constructed and perfected for the big day.
Some of the teachers were guinea pigs for the day as they had to stand under the makeshift showers and get clean for water conservation’s sake.
“They all got messy but the children took great care of their teachers which was great to see,” said Maree, adding that it was awesome to see how seriously all the learners took the challenge.
He hoped that from this experience the children would recognise that we all have a responsibility to use water more wisely.
Maree also added that such days were important for the children as education just does not end at theory alone, there are practical aspects that are just as important.
“We need to create sensible citizens for society, so education goes beyond the classroom, and it is that global awareness that we need to make them aware of.”
The school plans for many more activities such as these throughout the year as they feel that learning is best put across when it is done in a cross-curricular way that makes teaching fun.
