The City of Johannesburg is insourcing its 4 000-strong security force, stopping the outsourcing of this service through more than 150 contracts with service providers.
In May last year, during mayor Herman Mashaba’s state of the city address, the insourcing of security services was announced. Mashaba stated that it cost R360 million for the City’s security services.
The City is effectively paying R14 000 per security guard, while the guards themselves received a salary of as little as R4 500 per month
Mashaba highlighted that due to the complexities of local government regulations, cases of corruption, contractual commitments and legal considerations, the time taken to implement this process had been considerable.
“Currently, the City is undergoing an extensive process of ensuring the smooth integration of security personnel into the City whilst guaranteeing the financial sustainability of the entire operation,” he said.
Preference would be given to those security contract workers who provided services to the City at the time the insourcing project was first announced, Mashaba added.
The implementation timetable for this project will also be announced shortly and soon, the mayor said, a similar process would be started for workers contracted to provide cleaning services.
