Bloody Sunday on Witkoppen as father and daughter die in apparent murder-suicide

DOUGLASDALE – The police are investigating a case of murder after finding the bodies of a father and daughter on Witkoppen Road.

A man and his 14-year-old daughter were found dead following an apparent murder-suicide on 4 February.

Police apparently received a tip-off regarding a suspicious white Volkswagen Polo parked on Kingfisher Drive in Douglasdale at about 4pm.

Captain Mpho Tshetlhane of the Douglasdale Police Station said, “Plain-clothed crime prevention unit members responded to the complaint. On arrival at the scene, they found a 52-year-old man inside the vehicle.

“The members then asked to search his vehicle but the suspect requested they go to the police station because the officers were not in uniform.”

The officers followed the man in his vehicle but instead of heading to the police station, he accelerated and continued driving straight along Witkoppen Road.

The police tried to pull him off the road, but the man continued driving until the corner of Witkoppen Road and Malibongwe Drive where he stopped his vehicle.

When he realised that he was cornered by the police he pulled out a firearm and shot himself in the upper body.

He was certified dead at the scene.

On closer inspection, the police found the body of a 14-year-old girl wrapped up in a white duvet lying on the backseat of the man’s vehicle.

The girl was also certified dead at the scene with a bullet wound to her head.

The police managed to trace the family of the suspect. Investigations revealed that the teenager’s body found in the vehicle was the daughter of the suspect.

An unlicensed firearm was also recovered and the motive behind the incident is still not known.

Police investigations are continuing.
Tshetlhane added, “We appeal to members of the public to keep on reporting criminal activities in their area by phoning Douglasdale Police Station.”
