‘Make sure you are calling us for the right reasons’ – Police

LINDEN – The police are encouraging you to make sure you are calling the correct call centre when reporting a bylaw infringement.

The Linden police are encouraging people to make a mental note of the numbers community members can call to report by-law infringements.

“We often have people calling us to report incidents relating to by-laws, such as cable theft, vagrancy and potholes… While we care strongly about the wellbeing of our community, there are dedicated call centres that people can call to attend to these matters,” said Captain Walter Spencer, Linden Police Station spokesperson.

While the City’s 10111 call centre has been a success for crime reporting, callers are asked to contact the relevant department when reporting a non-crime related issue.

For instance, the Johannesburg Metro Police are not merely there to enforce traffic infringements, they handle matters related to accidents, vagrancy and fraud.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency is there to handle matters relating to road infrastructure. They have also developed their nifty new Find & Fix mobile app to report potholes, broken traffic lights, and even where hail is occurring.

It is understandable that many residents would think incidents of crime, such as cable theft or illegal dumping, should be reported directly to the police, but both Pikitup and City Power have their own dedicated hotlines to report these incidents.

Below is a list of numbers residents can call relating to municipal bylaws:

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department – 011 375 5918/011 758 9650
Accidents, vagrancy, noise pollution, air pollution, illegal vending and building issues
