UPDATE: Simba Mhere’s killer was at some point travelling at more than 200km/h

Data from vehicle tracking company suggest the convicted accused was travelling at about 208 km/h shortly before the accident.

Update, 31 January, 2pm

The convicted killer of TV presenter, Simba Mhere and his friend Kady-Shay O’Bryan, was recorded to be driving over the speed limit.

On 31 January, Magistrate David Mahango delivered judgment and found Preshalin Naidoo guilty on two counts of culpable homicide. The Magistrate went through the evidence led by state witnesses.

Mahongo highlighted that evidence led by the vehicle tracking company that had a unit in Naidoo’s car proved that the accused was driving above the speed limit.

The tracking company told the court that between 30 and 31 January they recorded 37 incidents of exceeding the speed limit in the said vehicle.

Evidence led in court suggests that the accident occurred just after 5.36am on 31 January 2015. At the time of the accident, the vehicle was travelling at about 166 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A few minutes prior to that, the vehicle was recorded travelling at about 208km/h.

Mahongo said it was evident that the accused recklessly caused the death of the deceased.

The case has been remanded to 9 March for the probation officer’s report and sentencing.

Original report, 31 January, 1.19pm

The Randburg Magistrates Court found 24-year-old Preshalin Naidoo guilty on two counts of culpable homicide.

Naidoo is the man who was driving the car that caused the crash in which TV presenter Simba Mhere and his friend Kady-Shay O’Bryan died.

The accident occurred in the early hours of 31 January 2015 on William Nicol Drive in Fourways.

In handing down judgement, Magistrate David Mahango said the state proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that the accused caused the crash in which the two died.

Mahango said all state witnesses gave credible evidence and were truthful.

Mahango, however, said the court found the version of the defence far-fetched and fabricated.

Judgment continues.
