Leading by example at Sharonlea Primary School

SHARONLEA – Badges of honour grace the lapels of Sharonlea Primary School's 2018 leaders.

Vince Lombardi once said ‘leaders are born, they are not made.’

He validated this view by the addition that they are made by hard effort, which is the price all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.

Sharonlea Primary School recently inaugurated its 2018 leaders and these 26 pioneers lead by the example that with the dedication to a goal, one can reach ultimate success.

Principal, Carla Hercules, said on this day the children took an oath and also pledged that they would lead by example.

“Their parents were invited too so it was quite a nice moment for everyone to witness,” she said.

The selection of the group takes place at the end of their Grade 6 year and the entire staff and school vote for the prospective candidates.

Hercules explained that there is a comprehensive point system that each has to go through. After all of that, the candidates with the highest points are announced at academic prize-giving.

This valiant troop will have various duties at the school along with their special project which consists of various outreach initiatives they would have to run throughout the year.

For this project, they will be led by teacher, Jocelyn McCrea. Hercules said that although they do take a child’s academic work into account when choosing a leader, it does not solely rest on that.

“We do not only take top achievers, we look at their commitment, responsibility, behaviour in the classroom, interpersonal skills and the like, as these are things teachers look at throughout the year,” she said.

McCrea said she was privileged to work with this group because of their different personalities as she would get to learn something new from each of them and this is one of the exciting aspects to look forward to this year.
