Geosmin detected in Joburg drinking water

JOBURG – Johannesburg Water says consumers may detect an intermittent earthy or musty taste due to the intermittent presence of geosmin.

If your water has a strange smell and taste, it likely is because of geosmin which has been detected in Johannesburg Water’s drinking water.

Isaac Dhludhlu, Johannesburg Water’s communications manager, said the substance causing the odours is not harmful to human health.

“The taste and odour will sometimes manifest itself in the potable water supply. The problem occurs infrequently and is usually of short duration,” Dhludhlu said.

He explained that during warm periods, the raw water source which is the Vaal Dam, has blue-green algae which causes unwelcomed taste and odour constituents in the drinking water.

Consumers may detect an intermittent earthy or musty taste due to the intermittent presence of geosmin.

“Taste and odour problems are not unique to the Rand Water’s area of supply but are experienced worldwide.”

Johannesburg Water said it is committed to providing water and sanitation service which is of high quality to all residents. It will continue to run tests to ensure that the health of residents is not compromised.
