Ward councillor looks back on 2017 and the challenges ahead

JOBURG – Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood is looking forward to a fruitful New Year.

It was a busy year for Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood but he is looking forward to a fruitful New Year.

One of his biggest achievements of last year includes establishing a public and private partnership between City Parks and City Rock. In this partnership, City Rock maintained and cleaned up a section of the park in Rabie Street in Fontainebleau.

In exchange, City Rock is allowed to use a section of the park for parking. They have also established a disc golf range in the park and this is an incentive for people to use the park.

“The establishment of a residents’ association in the Fontainebleau area, the two water upgrade projects in the Bryanston 3 part of the ward, the initial planning stages of the Bond Street storm water upgrade and the regular clean-up in the area with the local RAs taking an active role,” added Wood.

The Ward 104 councillor’s biggest struggle is the huge backlog in infrastructure development and maintenance of the ward.

However, this year, he plans to continue to drive and promote recycling in the ward as well as to promote rain harvesting and foster a culture of water saving.

“[I want] to work with non-government organisations in the ward and fight the drug problem and to fight the plight of the homeless. To build on the strong relationship that exists with residents’ associations and improve on service delivery as well as to continue working with the community and act as the link between them and the city,” said Wood.
