Scammers drive off with family car

RANDBURG – A family needs help to find their white Toyota Camry that was illegally sold to an unsuspecting resident in the Randburg area.

Residents are asked to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Camry that was illegally sold to an unsuspecting customer.

Maria Holzhauzen informed the Randburg Sun that her 76-year-old mother, who suffers from mild Alzheimer’s, was scammed by two men who claimed they would sell her car for her.

“They said that they would help her get a smaller car, and they would sell the Camry on her behalf,” said Holzhauzen.

The men had told her mother they sold the car for R30 000 and were going to give her a portion of it, however, she did not want the money as she just wanted the car back.

By that point, she had already given the scammers the car keys without signing any papers. She added that both the car and the men in question have now disappeared.

Holzhauzen went to the police for help who informed her that they needed more information to assist her.

“We need to produce the transfer of ownership documents to check the signature,” she explained.

Holzhauzen also said they could not say it is theft nor can they say it is fraud.

The family is quite sure that the unsuspecting new owner of the car lives in the Randburg area.

“We just want to warn people of such scams,” she said.

They are still in search of the Camry with the number plate RYR248GP.
