Know what to do in a medical emergency

JOBURG – Quick Response Service gives the lowdown on calling for an ambulance

Emergencies are unexpected and it is important to know what to do in emergency situations, especially those involving medical assistance.

Quick Response Service (QRS), an emergency medical service provider, gave a list of things to remember when calling for an ambulance.

“It is crucial that you provide the dispatcher with your name and contact details in the event of an emergency. It enables them to keep you updated on where the ambulance is as well as allow you to contact them to provide further information regarding what is happening on the scene,” said QRS spokesperson, Jackie van Deventer.

Van Deventer explained that giving as many details as possible about the medical emergency enables the emergency service to send out the appropriate resources for the emergency.

Here are some simple tips:

  • Stay as calm as you possibly can
  • Call a local ambulance for assistance
  • Provide the dispatcher with your location
  • State your emergency – provide the dispatcher with as much detail as possible
  • Give the dispatcher an alternative contact person if you’re able to.

When you give your location remember:

  • A house number
  • A street name
  • A complex name
  • Suburb name
  • Landmarks.
