Q &A : How to treat an abandoned cat in your complex

RANDBURG – Dog and cat behaviourist, Katherine Brown shares her insights on how to best deal with an abandoned cat in your complex.

We see them all too often in complexes, abandoned cats roam the residence and mostly come to be quite bothersome to other pets.

Randburg Sun spoke to dog and cat behaviourist, Katherine Brown on how people should interact with these abandoned furry friends.

Why do people abandon their pets?

Pets are abandoned for many reasons. It could be financial, people may be moving to a place that doesn’t allow animals, they might have grown tired of their pets or might be annoyed with them.

Also, they may be going on holiday or getting a new pet. Whatever the reasons might be, abandonment is not the solution as there are many organisations and shelters that can help with rehoming a pet. Abandonment is extremely cruel and causes suffering to an animal.

What do cats do when they have been abandoned?

Many cats will stay in the same area, hoping that their owners will come back. Cats are extremely emotional animals and form strong bonds with their owners.

Being abandoned is highly traumatic for a cat, and they will most probably grieve the absence of their owners. Some cats may try to move into another person’s home, especially if they’re hungry and looking for comfort.

How should abandoned cats be treated in complexes?

Like all animals, abandoned cats should be treated with respect and care. They did not ask to be abandoned, and they are probably confused and scared.

They should not be chased, scared off, or harassed in any way. Causing an already distressed animal fear is extremely unfair and cruel. These animals need help.

What should residents do?

Be careful when you allow a strange cat into your home if you have other animals. You don’t know the medical history of the cat, whether they’ve had vaccinations or if they’re carrying any illnesses.

If you’re interested in adopting an abandoned cat, and the cat is friendly, make sure to take them to your vet before introducing them to your animals.

Also, inform the SPCA of the situation. It is fine to feed the cat in a quiet area, as this could aid in catching the cat and finding them a new home.

What should you look out for?

If an abandoned cat looks thin or ill, it is crucial to get help as soon as possible. Not only is it important to prevent suffering in any animal, an ill cat could potentially pass on illness to other cats in the area. Contacting your local SPCA is the best solution in this case.

Is it better to take the cat to SPCA?

The SPCA should always be informed when an animal is abandoned.

Animal abandonment is mentioned in the Animal Protection Act, and the relative authorities should be contacted for assistance. The SPCA can also help with catching or trapping abandoned cats and finding new homes for them. Taking the cat to the SPCA is a good option.
