Medals for police heroes

NORTH RIDING – The Johannesburg West Police Cluster awarded medals of 10, 20 and 30 years' service to officers at a ceremony held at the Ticketpro Dome.

The Johannesburg West Police Cluster awarded medals of 10, 20 and 30 years’ service to officers at a ceremony held at the Ticketpro Dome on 25 November.

Police members stand to attention awaiting their medals.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Janet Basson said, “I am so thankful to be part of this occasion. It is another opportunity to side with the best of the best.

“Today is a day to honour the members of the cluster who have run the race and gone the extra mile. Whether they have worked 10 or 30 years, they have all worked long hours putting their lives on the line to keep our citizens safe.

“The medals that they are wearing are the symbols of dedication, commitment, loyalty and patriotism. A true patriot is a person who is prepared to lay down his or her life for the community that they serve.”

More than 20 recipients also received the SAPS Centenary Medal.

Senior police officials march to inspect the awardees.

One of the recipients, spokesperson for Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said, “I am very proud to be receiving a medal today.

The centenary medal is awarded to members of the police, reservists or a civilian employee of the service who has served since the police centenary before 2013. It is awarded to anyone who has displayed a flawless character.”

Lieutenant General Janet Basson pins a 20 year service medal on a recipient.

Basson said, “I would also like to give a special thank you to all police reservists who received their medal today. Some have worked more than 10 years without any remuneration at all.”
