Police accused of being no help to victim

HONEYDEW – 'Do not play games here, you were not hijacked, you were robbed. If you were hijacked you would know. You would have been taken somewhere else,' - Police

An officer from Honeydew Police Station is accused of not helping a robbery victim open a case.

Kevin McLennan was allegedly robbed of his possessions while driving to an event. He was travelling on Republic Road and had turned onto William Nicol Drive. While waiting to merge with the rest of traffic at the yield sign, the vehicle in front of him flashed their hazard lights.

In a YouTube video, McLennan explained the incident which has left him angry and disappointed at the police.

“My windows were open and I did not pay attention to the car ahead. Four men then stepped out of the vehicle and walked towards my car. One of the men walked towards my passenger side window and asked where North West was,” he said.

While he was distracted, one of the men appeared at the driver’s side window and allegedly pointed a gun at Mclennan. They allegedly stole two cellphones, R1 000 and two pairs ofsunglasses. One of the men then took out the keys and forced him to open the boot.

After ruffling through the boot, the men told McLennan to drive off. He drove to the nearest service station for help and then went home to recover. At home, he logged onto the internet and tried to locate his two cellphones which were off, and he blocked them.

The next day, McLennan went to Honeydew Police Station to open a case and after waiting in line, an officer attended to him.

“I told the officer I had been hijacked. He asked me for an ITC number from my nearest cellphone branch, which I had forgotten about,” he said.

According to McLennan, the officer said, ‘Do not play games here, you were not hijacked, you were robbed. If you were hijacked you would know. You would have been taken somewhere else.’

McLellan then stormed out to his vehicle.

He went to Douglasdale Police Station where he was told to open the case at the Randburg Police Station, the station closest to where the robbery had occurred.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said they are aware of the complaint and it will be investigated thoroughly.

“He [McLennan] needs to put in a formal complaint to the station commander and the matter will be investigated. Members of the community need to contact other officers for further intervention before running to the media and other social networks.”
