VOX POP: A “coup de grace” for Zimbabwe?

RANDBURG – Local Zimbabwean nationals share their opinion on the supposed military coup in Zimbabwe.

RANDBURG – It seems as if Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe’s 37-year hold on power is over.

According to some reports, Mugabe is under house arrest and military leaders, who snatched power from him on Wednesday, are part of the talks being held to form a transitional government.

News agencies like CNN reported that tanks were seen at key intersections in the capital of Harare, but otherwise, the streets have been quiet.

Mugabe’s decision to dump his vice president, a move widely seen as the first step in handing the reins of power over to his wife, seems to be the trigger that pushed the military to act.

How do some of the thousands of local Zimbabwean nationals feel about the “coup de grace” for Zimbabwe?

Some shared their opinions with the Randburg Sun.

MDUDUZI NKOZA: When I was young, Zimbabwe used to be a country just as good as this one. I hope that things will turn around in Zimbabwe. Mugabe has been in power for so long, that any change will be a great thing.

ADAM MOYO: I’m taking it a relief. The Zimbabweans have suffered a lot, and we hope that one day there will be change. I hope that it will go in the right direction and that the transition in government will be peaceful.

CAROLINE MPOFU: The old man is old. I think he needs to step down and let the young blood have a chance. If he is not fully arrested, I don’t think anything will change. It will just mean that someone related to him like his wife will step in to claim power.

JABULANI NDLOVU: Things are going to be a whole lot better across the border. My brother and my sister were killed by a crocodile trying to cross the Limpopo. The situation is bad so I welcome any change.
