Amelia (7) and Nicola (10) Blazeby of Curro Aurora Primary School have had an amazing success collecting plastic bottles to help with the Hartbeespoort Dam crisis.
The 2-litre bottles are needed as flotation for a net to contain water hyacinth growing in the dam which absorbs all the oxygen, killing the natural plant and marine life in the body of water.
So far, the girls have managed to collect more than 1 000 bottles. To drive interest in the initiative, the girls created a competition between the senior and junior schools to see which one could collect the most bottles.
Nicola said, “I think we [the senior primary school] won hands down. We collected about 600 bottles and the junior school collected about 450.”
For the past week, Aurora parents were seen loading bottles in their cars and walking into the schools with more bottles than they could carry.
The theme for the primary school’s curriculum, environment and sustainability, was only fitting for the bottle collection.
“The highlight of their week has been literally swimming in the hundreds of bottles that we have collected after I put them in my combi,” said mom Pamela Blazeby. “We emptied a whole bag so that we couldn’t get in, so we jumped on top and had a lot of fun,” said Amelia.
Nicola struggled to contain her excitement and said, “Next month we are going fishing at the dam for my birthday, and I can’t wait to see all the bottles,
“We will also drop off any more bottles that we get when we head there next month.”
With the help of their mom, they dropped off the bottles at the collection point at the Caxton offices in Weltevreden Park.
