Soil erosion relief for North Riding residents

NORTH RIDING – Residents will be sleeping a little easier after a project to fix eroded ground got underway last week.

The residents of Ravenna complex on Blandford Road in North Riding will be sleeping a little easier as a stabilisation project to rehabilitate their severely eroded ground got underway last week.

Ward 134 councillor, Wendy Alexander said the safety of some of the residents of the complex was being severely compromised by the situation.

Alexander said, “The generalised erosion and destabilisation of the ground had been ongoing for many years and little, if anything, was being done to address the problem … until now.”

She observed that the soil erosion was so severe that the foundations of the house could very easily have been affected.

Alexander continued, “There were huge gaping holes in the ground that could have given way at any time … particularly if there had been any significant earthquake in the surrounding areas.

“After I conducted a site visit with the resident whose house was most at risk and the City stakeholders responsible for maintaining the stormwater system, the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s work began to correct the situation and restore the eroded ground to what it should be.

“Significant earthmoving equipment, tons of sand and other appropriate ground fillers and stabilisers were brought on site. The project will see the area restored in such a way that the family’s safety can once again be guaranteed.”

The residents told Alexander they were grateful for her intervention and feel safer now that the underlying cause of the problem had been addressed.

They also expressed grateful thanks to the roads agency in Region C for rehabilitating and beautifying the area once more.
