Vox Pop: Data hack leaves Randburgers worried

RANDBURG – We spoke to Randburg residents about one of the biggest data breaches in South African history.

Last week, one of the biggest data breaches in South African history worried many South Africans.

More than 30 million South Africans could have had their sensitive data sold on the Internet to web hackers.

According to Times Live, one of South Africa’s top real estate companies has admitted to being the unwitting source of the largest known personal data breach to date in the country.

It has also been discovered that the dump of personal information – estimated at 31,6 million records – includes the estimated income‚ addresses and cellphone numbers of the likes of President Jacob Zuma‚ Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba and Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.

We asked the people of Randburg, some of whom did not know that they were even at risk if they were worried about their sensitive data being hacked.

BUSHI LEDWABA: It’s worrying and I am concerned. It must be because of these people that phone you all the time and you wonder where they got your info from.

EDNA: This is something concerning both me and you… I do think being online and using Internet banking has defiantly put me at risk. We put trust so easily into these things.

ERICA: I knew about this, but I’m not overly concerned for myself. I do feel that it is problematic for our country on the whole.

THAMY ZULU: I have never used the Internet or mobile banking, so I’m not worried about my bank details being leaked.

TOM BROWN: I’m not that comfortable, but I feel that I have less exposure than some people do online. I only use Internet banking sometimes, so the risk for me is not that high.
