Women gain the skills to empower themselves

RANDBURG – Founder of Socio-Economic Development Organisation for Women, Maryam Mphuti shares how she hopes her organisation can bring change to the community.

The empowerment of women in communities has benefits that are farreaching and Socio-Economic Development Organisation for Women (Sedow) knows just why.

Co-founder, of this non-profit organisation, Maryam Mphuti, said it aims to empower women through varying disciplines.

“I started Sedow because, after months of looking for a job myself, I got frustrated and decided to divert my energies elsewhere,” said Mphuti adding that she put her energy into starting an organisation aimed at the upliftment of women.

It was this desire to help create change in society, coupled with her views that women face various forms of discrimination in the workplace, that led her to the creation of this empowerment programme.

Due to the high unemployment rate in the country, Mphuti said she felt quite unsettled but opted to be part of the solution and not just complain about it. Sedow aims to empower women through the use of their hands by teaching them furniture making and sewing; and also to teach business acumen.

“Some of the social ills that occur in society are because people are not financially stable which leads to such things as prostitution,” said Mphuti.

The organisation also seeks to focus on the financial empowerment of women. Mphuti said she hopes the organisation is used as a platform where women can be trained in different skills to enrich their lives.

“We will have such things like corporate training and skills development programmes that will help women start their own businesses.”

Mphuti sentiments were shared by co-founder, Lesego Aamilah Mokoloboto, who said that she hopes their organisation will help eradicate poverty in the country and lessen the unemployment rate.

“I want this organisation to serve as a place to attend to all the women in the country and that it grows internationally, helping others across Africa and beyond – along the same lines as the AU and UN,” she said.

Sedow is currently in search of professionals who are willing to assist in the training, as well as sponsorships from companies and community support.
