The final phase of the M1 bridge’s reopening has been halted by recent rains.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency warned motorists that the three lanes heading to the south between the Oxford and Federation bridges will only be opened a week after initially planned.
The roads entity said they are now scheduled to reopen on Monday, 23 October. Currently, only two lanes are open to traffic travelling south through the M1 construction project.
The northbound carriageway did reopen on 9 October. This after almost two years of maintenance work that started in November 2015.
Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba said the R140 million project, which is one of the largest construction projects ever carried out by the roads entity, is part of a strengthened road network which, he said, is intrinsic to economic growth.
