The residents of Joburg usually celebrate transport month this time of the year and focus on using public transport instead of adding to the daily congestion on the road.

The City of Johannesburg has again launched the initiative alongside the Gauteng provincial government.
The month’s schedule is jam-packed with activities that aim to educate and enlighten road users about the benefits of using public transport.
The City’s MMC for Transport, Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said the City is ‘going all out’.
“There will be interactions with commuters, public transport operators, and drivers, as well as learner transport,” she said.

5 October
Children in Alexandra will be given bicycles to encourage them to travel safely and speedily.
10 October
The City will host a senior citizen appreciation day to give 50 seniors an opportunity to experience public transport like the Metrobus and the Gautrain.
12 October
The City will interact with commuters at Gandhi Square in the inner city and visit the Metrobus Milpark depot.
14 October
To appreciate 100 public transport drivers, the City will host a drivers’ appreciation day where an advanced driver training course will be launched.
20 October
The City will host a Kasi-to-Kasi tour where teams from different organisations will use public transport like taxis, metered taxis, the train, tuk-tuks and busses to get around.
21 October
A road safety prayer event will be hosted alongside the Meadowlands community in Soweto.
23 – 27 October
A career expo at the Sci Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown will be held to expose learners to transport career opportunities.
29 October
To promote cycling as a mode of transport, a freedom cycle event which will start at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in town and end at Vilakazi Street in Soweto is planned.
