Blairgowrie Collectors Toy Fair better than ever 25 years later

BLAIRGOWRIE– Toy collectors explore the annual Blaigowrie Collectors Toy Fair.

The Blairgowrie Recreation Centre was transformed into a toy collectors’ haven, at the Blairgowrie Collectors Toy Fair.

The annual event featured an array of unique items for toy enthusiasts to possibly own. A number of people travelled great distances to visit the fair on 24 September to find vintage pieces, collectables and rare items.

Blairgowrie Collectors Toy Fair event co-ordinator Donovan Ravenscroft said he has been involved in this event for 25 years, and which takes place four times a year. Over the past 20 years, he has sold toy cars to the tune of R10 million. The fair was originally founded by Peter Matthews and Roger Hill.

Ravenscroft commented, “The passion and enthusiasm shown by exhibitors are what have made the shows such a success. It has a large following, and supporters also call me to come and see their collections. I used to travel around the country to host different shows in cities such as Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.”

There are Meccano sets, model trains, Marklin dolls and dollhouse collectables, comics, McDonalds collectables, cars and planes. As toy enthusiasts explored the fair, exhibitors were ready to answer questions.

Toy collector John Clingen displayed various toys such as Robbie the Robot which was the star attraction at his stall. He said Robbie is a talking robot which is programmed to move, dance and be a watchdog in your home. His eyes have sensors which detect movement.

“The robot is controlled by a joystick to do what you want it to do. It’s imported from America and is very rare because it’s very complicated. A toy for both adults and children,” said Clingen.

The toy fair also raises funds to keep hosting the event, including donating funds to various causes such as FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the South African Guide-Dogs Association.

The last event of the year will take place in November at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre.
