Community pull up their sleeves to clean Golden Harvest Park

GOLDEN HARVEST – Community members gather to clean up Golden Harvest Park.

Residents pulled up the sleeves to get their hands dirty for their much-loved Golden Harvest Park.

Members of the community spread across the park with a focus on Hunter Road and surrounds as there was much to be done.

Chairman of Friends of Golden Harvest Park, Stephen Sweetman, said people of all ages came out to show their support.

Sweetman said what makes the park so great is the fact that it is generally a clean open area with a variety of birds, mammals and vegetation.

“It is also a huge children’s play area for families to meet and picnic.”

On the day, Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele was also there to get his hands dirty.

“We also had the support of Joburg City Parks who collected all the cut vegetation,” said Sweetman. He said he hoped initiatives like these went beyond the beautification of the park and that it also gave the community an opportunity to give back in their own way.

About 30 bags of debris, including alien plants and rubbish, were collected. Sweetman said it is important to keep our parks clean so that they can be enjoyed by everyone. “Untidy parks won’t be used, which presents a risk of development for housing and commercial use,” said Sweetman.
