Little fingers got really dirty, all in hopes of making the environment better for future generations when Vuleka Primary School planted 20 trees with the help of BOS ice teas and GreenPop.
Monique Henderson, brand manager for BOS, said in the company’s seven-year history, it has worked with Greenpop, a Cape Town based non-profit organisation to plant trees all over our beautiful country.
Together they have managed to plant 16 214 out of their target of 50 000 trees planted by 2020.
“The trees we have planted is attributed to our tree pledge – for every 2 000 units of the product sold, we plant and maintain a tree.” Henderson explained that this is all due to the consumers’ support of the brand.
Arbor Week, which ran from 1 to 7 September, gave the company an ideal opportunity to really bring the message home to the children of Vuleka about the beauty and importance of trees. About 30 children from the school’s Grade 2 class gathered to plant 20 white karee trees which are indigenous.
Both the GreenPop and BOS teams spent the day with the children playing educational games about trees. All the trees were planted afterwards.
Georgina Avlonitis, who heads up the programme for GreenPop, said education about the environment has to start while children are still young, as this would make them more conscious when they grow older.
“This is our way of getting people active and not anxious about the planet,” said Avlonitis.
On the day, children brought grey water they had collected at home to water the trees when they were planted.
“We aim to spread environmental awareness and uplift under-green communities by making greening fun,” said Henderson, who added that they want to give back to society in a meaningful way.
By the end of the day, the children were taught how to plant a tree, along with how to recycle. Avlonitis said that they would also go to Vuleka SSB High School where they would plant Wild Olive Trees.
