Mother in the dock for child neglect

JOBURG – 34-year-old mother is accused of child neglect and abuse.

A Yeoville mother (34) was released on a warning in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 30 August.

The mother is accused of child neglect and abuse.

The state is alleging that the mother abandoned her two children and went on a drinking spree at a local shebeen in Yeoville. The state also alleged that the accused physically abused the eldest child, aged two. The youngest child is a month old.

It is understood that a community member alerted the police about the accused’s alleged ill treatment and neglect of her children. The community member apparently found the children sitting outside the shebeen.

She claimed to have approached the mother who was inside the shebeen to go out and take care of her children but the mother allegedly refused and told the community member to mind her own business.

The community member then took the children into her care and alerted the police. When the police arrived, they found the children in the care of the community member while the mother was still at the shebeen drinking.

She was released on a warning and will be back in court again on 8 September.
