New MMC Leah Knott filling two roles at City

JOBURG – Joburg's new Economic Development MMC is also a ward councillor in the west of the municipality.

Democratic Alliance ward councillor, Leah Knott, has been appointed the new MMC for Economic Development.

This comes after the former MMC, Sharon Peetz, was removed from her position by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba earlier this month on grounds of suspected misconduct.

In April, the African National Congress Joburg spokesperson, Jolidee Matongo, had claimed that evidence was provided to Mashaba about Peetz allegedly using her position to get free international travel for a relative. After investigating the accusations, Mashaba announced that Peetz was cleared of the allegations.

But the matter came under the spotlight again when the mayor said new evidence revealed that Peetz had given him falsified proof of payment.

Knott said she was currently still the councillor for Ward 97 and therefore filling two roles in the City.

Mashaba said Knott brought with her years of ward-based community activism. “MMC Knott holds a legal qualification and years of experience in the property development planning industry prior to becoming a councillor,” he said

“Under MMC Knott’s leadership, the Department of Economic Development will be driving the implementation of the City’s jobs and growth strategy. The key deliverables of this strategy will be the achievement of investment and job creation. I am confident MMC Knott will play an invaluable role in this regard.”
