Please help these deserving Grade 12s

COSMO CITY – Help matric learners shine on their matric dance.

Mampho Mokone launched an initiative that aims to collect matric dance wear for matriculants whose parents and families can not afford to buy dresses and suits.

Mokone started collecting matric dance wear for underprivileged children in the area as she felt that parents tend to get themselves into debt due to their children’s night of glamour.

She said, “parents open accounts and go to loan sharks to borrow money and they end up not being able to pay back the money”.

In the recent past, she donated shoes and dresses to school girls in the area, who could not afford to buy their own and eventually realised that there are more matriculants that go through this and she needed a way to help as many as possible as fast as possible.

She started asking for donations of dresses, shoes, shirts, ties, accessories and makeup and has since collected over 20 dresses and pairs of shoes. Furthermore, she has attained the services of three volunteer makeup artists that will be doing makeup and nails prior to the matric dances.

Mokone believes it is important for matriculants to attend their matric dances as it gives them something to celebrate and look forward to. She also said children should see it as an incentive for making it this far.

“It should motivate one to move on to greener pastures, beginning with passing their matric”.

This would be their last major event at school and it would be nice for them to look back at the event and have good memories about it, she added. Those who do not attend due to lack of finances to buy clothing, miss out on the memory and experience and it sticks with them forever.

Mokone urged those who are able, to donate dresses, shoes, shirts, trousers, accessories and even toiletries to ensure that the matriculants have the night of their life in style. She said she is specifically struggling to get apparel for the boys and even more importantly, to assist them to be well groomed for the day.

She believes that the parents should rather save the money they have for things such as university registration fees. Where possible the community should help these deserving matriculants.
