Starting on 31 July, this week has been full of surprises with news of the City of Johannesburg’s infamous billing crisis which made news headlines most of the week.
Let’s take a look at what you might have missed:
Monday
The Johannesburg ombudsman’s help line went back online after being down for a couple of days.

As the City’s independent watchdog, the ombudsman resolves billing issues and investigates complaints of maladministration, violation of human rights and service delivery issues to help champion accountability within the City.

Tuesday
Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has taken full responsibility for the lingering billing crisis
REA: Mashaba impels fixing of billing crisis
He said that the tipping point came when it was revealed that regionalisation of the City’s billing system left unfair arrears and fees for pre-termination notices in its wake. Now open days will be held across the City to interact with residents about billing issues.
Wednesday
In the weekly Councillor’s Corner, Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood looked at ways in which residents can help displaced people across Joburg

He said residents can help alleviate this problem by getting involved with faith-based and non-profit organisations since these bodies run feeding schemes, employment agencies, and shelters.
Thursday
Mashaba removed the DA’s Sharon Peetz from her position as MMC for Economic Development on 2 August on grounds of alleged suspected misconduct.

Friday
The City’s Finance MMC, Dr Rabelani Dagada, announced that the billing open days could resolve the crisis. He invited residents with outstanding queries to attend the open days and interact with officials. The first open day for Region B is scheduled for 12 August.
