Northriding Secondary School dancers have been selected to be part of the national team.
To get selected for the national team, dancers had to place either first, second or third in each school competition.
“At the end of the competition all dancers who placed in the top three were invited by the Dance School Sports League (DSSL),” said head of sports, Brendan Augustine. He explained that the top eight dancers from the three age groups were then selected for the Gauteng Dance Team.
The school, which now forms part of DanceSport SA, was ecstatic when four of its dancers made it through the gruelling national trials to surpass all odds. Adding to the excitement was the novel fact that this was the first time the school had ever competed in such an event.
Along with that, dance was only introduced to the school this year. Augustine said they found that learners enjoyed expressing themselves through dance and that was why they introduced it as an extramural. The school dance team now boasts 15 talented young dancers in various age groups.
Dancers took part in the freestyle street dance category and Augustine said the dancers were anything but nervous. “They were well prepared and it was something they loved doing.” To prepare for such an event dancers had three weeks preparation time and due to time constraints could only practise on Saturdays between 9am and 2pm. Augustine mentioned that the KwaZulu-Natal dance team was fierce competition for the dancers. “They have been involved in DSSL for a few years and they had many more dancers compared to the other provinces.”
