Randburg Civic Centre to get its due maintenance

BLAIRGOWRIE – A site visit to the Randburg Civic Centre makes it very clear that the building is in need of maintenance.

A site visit by various stakeholders was held at the Randburg Civic Centre to discuss several issues facing the building.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter gave insight on what some of the problem areas were.

The centre’s upkeep is the responsibility of the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) and some of the issues discussed were the state of the tarred parking lot, the damaged walkway from the parking to the building entrance, the state of the building, parking provision and access for persons with disabilities.

Potter said in the 2017/2018 financial year, which began on 1 July, the budget included R3 million for alterations to the Randburg CBD building.

“Recently JPC undertook a condition-based assessment of the Randburg Civic Centre building,” he said. Potter added that the final report and bill of quantities were expected shortly, which will guide JPC in terms of what alterations and maintenance were needed.

He said this maintenance would not likely be extensive but more functional and structural to extend the life of the building.

One of the pressing issues was paving along the walkway which had been damaged by private and cash in transit vehicles. Cash in transit vehicles needed to get as close to the entrance of the building as possible to safely collect money without endangering the lives of visitors and users of the centre.

“Security guards will be requested to control access and not allow other private vehicles to park and further damage the paving, until such time as it can be redone properly,” said Potter.

He concluded that issues at the centre were historical and inherited and would, unfortunately, take time to resolve. However, pressure would be put on JPC to begin with the maintenance within the limited budget that was allocated.
